FOOTBALL: Local sides set for Cup semi-final

Wins for Coningsby United and Mareham United sets up an exciting semi-final in the Challenge Cup.

Coningsby needed a penalty shootout to overcome Wrangle United as the sides were held at 1-1 after 120 minutes.

The travellers took the spoils 4-3 and set up a trip across the A155 to Mareham who beat Ruskington Rovers 1-0 at home.

Mareham will host Coningsby on Saturday February 23 for a 1.45pm kick-off.

The semi-final could set the tone for the second half of the league season as the two sides are battling it out near the top of Boston Taylors Service Garages Division One.

Top of the table Freiston Rovers, playing their first fixture since December 22, lost 5-3 at home to Wyberton Reserves giving Coningsby and Mareham the opportunity to catch them in the title chase.

Freiston could have extended their lead at the top of the table to 15 points, but remain 12 points ahead of Coningsby, who have three games in hand and are 14 points ahead of Mareham United, who have five games in hand over the league leaders. Both Coningsby and Mareham’s next fixtures this weekend are in the first round of the Barclays Brokers Willoughby Cup.

Coningsby host Old Doningtonians and Wyberton travel to Mareham.

After conceding 11 goals in their last two games, without scoring themselves, Woodhall Spa United put Spalding Town to the sword with a 6-0 demolition of the South Holland side.
