Claytons Athletic 0-2 Horncastle Town Development X1
Horncastle Town’s newly formed Development squad made a winning start to life in the Lincoln and District League last Sunday with an impressive win at much-fancied Claytons Athletic.
A fine team performance set up the victory, although Luke Shelbourn was very much a key figure as he led the line against intimidating opponents.
Shelbourn certainly put himself about, but was backed up by an impressive defensive performance, particularly from the centre half pairing of Callum Low and Tom Watson.
Town appeared to be daunted in the opening stages, but they grew into the game and were solid enough to cancel out any threat.
The opening goal of the game didn’t come until the 70th minute when Will Burton struck from 25-yards into the top left corner, giving the opposing ‘keeper no chance.
Town’s goalkeeper, Alan Johnson, made a crucial save soon after to maintain the advantage.
With Shelbourn continuingly being a nuisance up top, Town doubled their advantage through Andrew Bullivant who curled a shot in off the post from 20 yards with just five minutes remaining.
Town saw out the remainder of the game to secure all three points.
The team is without a game next weekend but return to action on September 21 at Witham FC.
