Welton U16s 3-3 Horncastle Town U16s

Horncastle Town’s under 16s will be happy with a point, but will feel they could have taken all three after letting a 3-0 lead slip.

After the initial 10 minutes in which Welton pushed forward looking for opportunities, Horncastle dominated the first half, enjoying the vast majority of possession and goal scoring chances.

The scoring began in the 13th minute. Horncastle won a corner on the left hand side of the pitch. The ball was played to the far post, Wythe’s effort hit the post and the ball rebounded to the edge of the penalty area, from where Johnson struck the ball past the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later Horncastle doubled their lead. The ball fell to Nixon some 25-yards out from goal, his shot slipped through the hands of the Welton goalkeeper into the bottom of the net.

Horncastle then went on to have a couple of close chances. As the match entered the 36th minute Wythe closed down a Welton defender close to the corner flag. The weak clearance came to Nixon who passed a couple of Welton defenders before making the score 3-0 to Horncastle.

The second half started evenly before Welton fought their way back into the match.

In the 49th minute Welton put together a good move through midfield which was followed by a well played ball to their forward just inside in the penalty area, the forward ran onto the pass and placed the ball beyond the Horncastle goalkeeper Carlton.

Ten minutes later, following a scramble at the edge of the Horncastle penalty area, the score moved to 3-2 as the Welton player blasted the ball into the corner of the net. The score then drew level in the 68th minute following a mix up in the Horncastle defence after a long goal kick, this allowed the Welton forward to place a looping shot over Carlton into the net.

The final 10 minutes were frantic with opportunities for both teams to win the match, none more so than in the final minute when Carlton was called upon to make an excellent save at his near post.

An away point is a good result though Horncastle will feel disappointed allowing a three goal lead to slip away.
