Horncastle Town U11s produced a battling performance against high flying Grimsby Borough but were unable to stave off a 4-2 defeat.
Town took the game to their opponents from the start with Joshua Baxter a key figure in midfield and it was no surprise when his sweetly struck shot found the back of the net.
Town really were a delight to watch with some lovely two-touch passing and flowing football. They could have gone 3-0 up at half time but were denied by the crossbar and an off-side decision.
Grimsby looked a different side in the second half and a two goal blast saw them snatch the lead.
They looked in the mood to finish things off as they set up camp in Town’s half and a third goal was inevitable as the hosts struggled to clear their lines.
James Smith pulled one back for Town thanks to a great move through the middle and a lovely piece of skill from Connor Pinkett.
Kyle Tempest produced another defensive master-class for Town and showed what a talent he is with brave tackles timed to perfection to fully deserve his man of the match award. Unfortunately, Town were left to ponder what might have been as they conceded again before the final whistle.
At times, Town looked a match for any team in the league and will hopefully build on their performance at Spilsby next week.
