Middle Rasen 4
Horncastle Town Reserves may have reached the semi finals of one cup competition but they crashed out of another last Saturday after a defeat at Middle Rasen.
Town did well to recover from the shock of conceding two goals inside the opening 20 minutes and Lewis Burchnall’s second half goal let them trailing 3-2.
The tie was balanced on a knife-edge but as Town pressed for an equaliser, Rasen clinched victory - and a place in the last four of the David Cooper Cup - from the penalty spot.
Town made several changes as Daniel Bodily and Josh Cheetham were recalled from first team duty while Ryan Nunn, Scott Maplethorpe and youngster George Swift also rejoined the squad.
It was the home side who made the better start and it was their left winger caused Town all the problems.
He gave Town the lead with an unstoppable shot and Town then found themselves two down with a neat finish from a teasing cross.
Town responded in the best possible fashion. Jack Baxter made a jinking run from right wing, pulling the ball back to Josh Cheetham who slotted the ball home to pull a goal back.
The goal seemed to spark Town into life and they began to put much more pressure on the Rasen defence, but went in at the break trailing 2-1.
Unfortunately, Town conceded a third goal soon after the re-start when ‘keeper Liam Smith couldn’t get a strong enough hand on a shot to stop the ball from crossing the line.
After a long period of attacking pressure, Town finally got a goal back when Lee Wilson’s blocked shot fell to Burchnall who finished well.
As Town looked for an equaliser, they were vulnerable to counter attacks and when Alex Enderby brought down a Rasen forward inside the box, Smith was sent the wrong way from the resulting spot kick.
The reserves return to league action this Saturday when they visit Retford looking for a win that could move off the bottom of the table.
