Trent Valley 1 AFC Harpars 3
Horncastle based Lincoln Sunday League side AFC Harpars strengthened their chances of becoming Division Three champions with an impressive 3-1 win over title contenders Trent Valley.
It was an impressive victory, not least because it brought Trent Valley’s amazing 34-game unbeaten run in the league to an end.
Michael Harness scored his 27th goal of a prolific campaign to put Harpars 1-0 ahead at half time.
They extended this lead in the second half with a goal from midfielder Carl Smith on the hour mark.
Harness then added to his tally with a header to give Harpars some breathing space.
Trent hit back shortly after to make it 3-1, but Harpars were strong enough to ride the storm and could have gone on to extend their lead.
The win puts Harpars 10 points clear at the top of the table. Trent Valley have four games in hand but both teams meet again at Horncastle Playing Fields on March 23 in a clash that could well decide which way the title goes.
Before then, Harpars have to concentrate on their home game against Jerusalum Reserves this Sunday (ko: 10.45am).
