Horncastle Town 5 AFC Louth 1

Summer signing Scott Wilson helped Horncastle Town hit the goal trail as they registered a hard earned win against local rivals AFC Louth in a pre-season friendly at The Wong last night (Tuesday).

It was 0-0 at half time but Wilson’s strike in the second half sparked four more goals before the final whistle.

The two sides produced a lively opening 45 minutes with opportunities being created at both ends.

The best chance fell to Town striker Tony Edwards but he was unable to take cash in, missing the target from six yards with his weaker foot.

The second continued in a similar pattern with both sides failing to capitalise on openings. However, Town took the lead thanks to Wilson on his return to the side after two seasons out as he redirected a cross from the left past the ‘keeper.

Ten minutes later, Edwards pounced on some sloppy defending from the opposition centre back, rounded the ‘keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Town made it 3-0 shortly after with the move of the game as substitute James Melia played a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Edwards who confidently chipped the oncoming ‘keeper.

Louth pulled a goal back but their hopes of salvaging something from the clash disappeared when Luke Blondel fired home Town’s fourth of the night with ten minutes to go.

Town still had time to make it five with when Scott Lowman’s effort rebounded off the post onto a retreating defender and cannoned into the back of the net.

Town are now unbeaten in all three of their pre-season fixtures but will be put to the test again on Saturday as they travel to last season’s County Cup semi-finalists, North Somercotes.

Team: Burchnall, Shinn, Low, Johnson, Rawdon, G.Melia, Lovett, Lowman, Swift (J.Melia), Wilson, Edwards.
