Town’s talented U14s saw the league title slip agonisingly through their grasp in a thrilling winner takes all clash against Lincoln United at The Wong.

Town trailed 3-0 at one stage after a whirlwind start by Lincoln, but deserve huge praise for a determined fightback.

And while they did miss out on top spot, they have the consolation of booking a promotion place alongside Lincoln.

Lincoln, with a strong wind at their backs, went ahead after two minutes and despite some big hearted efforts - led by ‘keeper Ayres - Town remained on the back foot.

Lincoln quickly added a second goal and were three-up after 18 minutes before Town showed signs of putting a poor start behind them.

Dean went within inches of grabbing a goal before Town grabbed a lifeline before the break when a quickly taken free kick saw Bevington tee up Cori Pearce who found the net.

With the wind now at their backs, Town took full advantage and Archie Offord rifled in a free kick from fully 35-yards.

Three minutes later, Harry Close pressed a defender to put the ball past his own ‘keeper to bring the scores level.

Town almost went ahead with another well taken free kick by Bevington that hit the cross bar.

Town still looked to be favourites for the points but suffered a blow when Pearce was sent off.

A man down, Town fought on, but it was Lincoln who scored what proved to be the winning goal with minutes to go.

Despite a valiant team effort Town were unable to find another goal and had to accept the result as the final whistle blew.

It was an exciting and extremely close game between the top two ‘B’ League squads who are thoroughly deserving of their promotion to the ‘A’ League next season.
