THEY had to wait for it but Saturday finally saw victory for Coningsby Reserves in the rescheduled final of the Willoughby Shield.

Up against Swineshead Institute Reserves and played at Boston Town’s Tattershall Road ground the spectators thought they were in for an action-packed treat when each team scored in the first 10 minutes.

But the pace slowed down to a sustainable level in this final, which was cancelled due to bad weather just a few weeks ago.

Both teams had several chances at further goals, but it was Coningsby that had the finishing touch, adding a second before half time.

The Reds were straight into the action in the second half, quickly gaining a third and seemingly sealing victory.

But football can be unpredictable at the most unexpected times and shortly before the end of the match Coningsby’s Danny Whitworth, in an unprecedented display of generosity, put one in his own net to make Swineshead’s scoreline look a little more respectable.

The last 10 minutes therefore turned into a desperate scramble with both sides feeling the need to score again.

This was not to be however and Coningsby Reserves held on to lift the shield.
