Woodhall Spa suffer title set–back
WOODHALL Spa’s hopes of winning the Lincolnshire Cricket Board’s Premier League title suffered a hammer blow on Saturday when they crashed to a surprise home defeat against struggling Lindum.
Skipper Jack Luffman and his players went into the clash with plenty of confidence after some encouraging displays against a star-studded Lashings XI in midweek.
However, they were comprehensively outplayed by Lindum who coasted to a nine-wicket victory thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from all-rounder Karanjit Bansal.
He picked up 5-46 as Woodhall Spa, batting first, were restricted to 150-8 from their 50 overs and then led the successful Lindum run chase with an unbeaten 82 from just 90 deliveries with 11 fours.
Woodhall desperately needed to post a challenging total on a good Jubilee Park batting track but only three batsmen - including Luffman (27) - managed to reach double figures.
From 39-0, Woodhall struggled and it a dogged unbeaten 60 off 106 balls from middle-order man Dan Hegarty to keep the board ticking over.
Bansal’s five wicket haul, which included the dangerous Ben O’Brien (7), came off a marathon 17 overs, five of which were maidens.
Bansal though, showed few ill effects of that bowling effort when he opened Lindum’s innings and was soon into his stride.
He dominated an opening stand of 62 with Geoff Middleton (17) and then teamed up with George Neal (52 not out) to ease Lindum home with almost 17 overs to spare.
Luffman turned to six different bowlers to try and stop the inevitable, but only Dan Milgate (1-31) picked up a wicket.
The result leaves Woodhall in fourth place in the table and even the news that long-time leaders Skegness had lost seemed scant consolation.
Woodhall visit next-to-bottom Boston on Saturday while the second team entertain Bourne at Jubilee Park.
