BATTLING Woodhall Spa gave top-of-the-table Haxey a massive fright before slipping to a two-wicket defeat in a nailbiting Lincolnshire Cricket Board Premier League clash at Jubilee Park last Saturday.

Woodhall, fresh from a morale boosting victory at Louth, looked to be in trouble after they were dismissed for 163, despite a terrific knock of 71 from in-form opener Ricky Lovelace.

Haxey, though, were soon in trouble against the impressive Ben O’Brien who ripped out the heart of their batting with some inspired pace bowling.

However, Graham Attenborough hit 67 and Haxey eventually stumbled to a winning score of 165 with just two wickets in hand.

The result was rough justice on Woodhall - and not least Australian ace O’Brien who finished with 6-43 off 14.1 overs.

Under blue skies, Woodhall won the toss and at 96-2, they appeared to be heading for a sizeable total with Lovelace leading the way again.

Mark Atkins kept a check on the scoring and when Lovelace went for 71 off 105 deliveries, Woodhall’s lower order struggled.

If Haxey thought they would coast home, Woodhall - and O’Brien in particular - had other ideas.

He struck in his first over and as wickets continued to tumble, Woodhall must have sensed victory when the visitors stuttered to 144-8 with dangerman Attenborough back in the tent.

However, Chinthaka Perera and Paul Bell added 21 runs in an unbroken ninth wicket stand to ease Haxey to a win that left them needing just one point from their remaining game to win the title.
