Warm taste
of revenge
for Horncastle

FOR once this summer the sun shone and both Horncastle Saturday and Sunday cricket teams were able to enjoy uninterrupted play in their respective home fixtures.

The Saturday team entertained Appleby Frodingham for the second week in succession.

With a stronger squad to select from, captain Nick Paige was looking to avenge the previous week’s away defeat to the Scunthorpe opposition.

Horncastle won the toss and chose to bat on an impressive looking wicket prepared by groundsman Julian Loveley.

The reliable opening pair of Roberts and Paige made their intentions known from the start.

Roberts set about the opening bowlers while Paige played the sensible holding role.

Roberts was the first to fall for 44 runs with the total standing at 81.

The skipper was then joined in the middle by Mark Kelsey and the pair continued to keep the scoreboard ticking along.

Their partnership was finally broken with the score on 173, when Paige was caught for 62.

Kelsey went on to score 37 while Loveley’s score of 33 contributed to a total of 251 for 6 from 45 overs.

Steady bowling by the Horncastle attack of Roberts, Hannam, Willerton, Hickling and Jackson saw the visitors from Scunthorpe restricted to 174 runs from their 45 overs giving Horncastle a maximum 20 point victory.

The Sunday team entertained local rivals Revesby the following day.

Sensible batting by openers Roberts and Wilson helped the young Horncastle team amass a score of 129 from their 40 overs.

In reply, the more experienced line-up from Revesby knocked off the score with a loss of only five wickets.

The visitors were made to work hard for their victory with some tight bowling from Roberts, Hannam, and youngster Steven Price.

This coming Bank Holiday Weekend sees a feast of cricket action down at Coronation Walk.

On Friday evening an All-Star Horncastle team entertain a Revesby select XI in a 16 over exhibition match.

The game starts at 5.30.

On Saturday the first team are at home to Holton le Clay and the Sunday team entertain Nettleham the following day.
