Horncastle’s Cricket Club’s Sunday team took the honours at the weekend with a thrilling one-wicket win against Bracebridge Heath in Division Three of the Lincoln and District League.
Final pair Ben Clarke and Michael Ackerman were the heroes for Horncastle as they defied everything Bracebridge could throw at them to edge their side over the winning line.
They came together with Horncastle - chasing a testing target of 222 - on 210-9.
The result could have gone either way, but Clarke and Ackerman came up trumps to clinch a much-needed win for skipper Richard Hickling’s side.
Earlier, Clarke was the pick of Horncastle’s bowlers as he finished with 3-14 off 7.4 overs as Bracebridge threatened to run away with the game.
Third wicket pair Oliver Bentley (70) and Joe Peveritt (85) did the bulk of the damage in a 156-run stand.
Rob Bee (4-56) and Clarke both bowled well in the latter stages of the innings to give Horncastle something to chase.
They then produced some determined batting in reply with Ben Fidling (45) and Gareth Jones (40) leading the way.
Hickling and Lima Wilkinson made vital contributions before Clarke and Ackerman showed they had the coolest heads in the ground.
l Horncastle’s Saturday team are still struggling for points in Division One of the Lincolnshire County League after crashing to a 140 run defeat at home to Holton-le-Clay.
Hopes that Coronation Walk would prove to be a lucky venue for Horncastle disappeared as Holton-le-Clay rattled up 204-7 off 45 overs.
Joe Smith (2-35). Jim Watters, Gareth Jones and Tom Johnson were the pick of Horncastle’s bowlers.
Unfortunately, Horncastle’s reply was stuck firmly in reverse gear. None of the top order reached double figures and only Smith (13) and Paul File 17 not out) eased the board round to a disappointing total of 64 when the final wicket fell.
