Overseas’ star Prasanna Jayawardene will warm up for his second season with Woodhall Spa Cricket Club by playing alongside some of the world’s top players.

The Sri Lanka Test ace has been named in the MCC squad for a series of matches in Abu Dhabi next month.

Jayawardene is set to play in a four day challenge match against County Champions Durham, starting on Sunday March 23.

He will also be involved in the preceding Emirates T20 tournament involving Lancashire, Sussex and a Kerala Premier League team. That starts on Friday March 21.

Jayawardene’s teammates in the MCC squad include India’s prolific opening batsman Virender Sehwag and Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.

Sehwag will captain the side in the four day match with Muralitharan in charge for the T20 games.

A number of England hopefuls have also been picked by the MCC, headed by Sam Robson (Middlesex), Kyle Hogg (Lancashire), Monty Panesar (Essex) and Harry Gurney (Nottinghamshire).

Jayawardene is due to return to Woodhall Spa in April to help the Jubilee Park-based club in their bid to win the ECB Lincolnshire Premier League.

They finished runners-up last season after being pipped for the silverware on the final day of the campaign.

There is, though, a doubt about Jayawardene’s availability in the opening weeks of the campaign as he could be included in the Sri Lankan squad that will tour England.

A wicketkeeper-batsman, Jayawardene recently made his Test comeback in the series against

Pakistan.
