Will Root, the younger brother of Yorkshire and England star Joe, dashed Woodhall Spa’s dreams of ECB Twenty20 glory on Sunday.

Root was the star of the show as Sheffield Collegiate ended Woodhall’s challenge in the regional semi finals at Elescar CC near Barnsley.

Root hit a commanding 75 to lead Yorkshire League T20 champions Collegiate to a total of 180.

Despite losing the prolific scoring Jonny Cheer to the first ball of their reply, Woodhall battled to 172-9 - just eight runs short of their target.

All-rounder Ben O’Brien was the star performer for Woodhall, taking 2-18 with the ball from his four overs.

He followed up with an impressive 57 and there were useful contributions from Matthew Sargeant and Jack Luffman.
