There was a first for Horncastle Cricket Club at the weekend when Bernadette Forge became the first female to represent the club in a senior Saturday game, when she turned out against Hartsholme 2nds in the Lincolnshire league on Saturday.

Bernie plays regularly for Barrowby Gurney in the Somerset league and also represents the county at under 15 level.

Club captain Nick Paige explained: “Bernie was visiting family and friends in Lincolnshire and when I told here we were short of players for Saturday she was only too keen to turn out for the Horncastle. She was not at all phased by playing with a team of complete strangers and far more senior than herself.”

Club Chairman Dean Wilkinson said, “The club was delighted to have Bernie representing the club; her performance and attitude was tremendous, she is a credit to her family and coaches, we hope she continues to enjoy her cricket.

“I just wish more of our own junior players showed the same ambition and desire to want to play for our Saturday team.”

Unfortunately Bernadette’s performance was cut short, when the game was abandoned with Horncastle on 88 for the loss of 5 wickets, because of a waterlogged field after a torrential downpour.
