Horncastle Cricket Club’s young side suffered a heartbreaking exit from the first round of the George Marshall Trophy at home to Haxey on Saturday.

After rain washed out any hopes of match action, the clash was decided on a bowl out between the two sides.

Haxey hit the stumps three times in their one over while Horncastle could only manage a couple of successes.

It was a cruel result for Horncastle who were not short on confidence after a double success the previous weekend.

*Horncastle’s Sunday XI were also out of luck when they lost by just seven runs to Hougham and Marston in a Lincoln and District League Division Three game.

Some excellent bowling dismissed Hougham and Marston for 118, but Horncastle’s could only muster 111 in reply in difficult batting conditions.

*Horncastle U15s were involved in a thrilling tie at East Lindsey League rivals Skegness.

Ben Wilkinson, Edward Applewhite and Declan Bennett were all among the wickets as Skegness batted first and were restricted to 70-6 off 20 overs.

Horncastle lost early wickets in their reply but Danny Wells (33) led them to the verge of victory before the last wicket fell with the score on 70 in a pulsating finish.
