DESPITE the poor weather, Woodhall Spa Tennis Club's ladies first team managed to complete their match against Eastgate at Uphill, Lincoln.

Eastgate proved to be very tough opposition - Jenny Caswell and Sue Leggate came close in two of their three rubbers but could not quite manage a win.

Helen Mair and Sue Bowser left it until the last round to gain their one win 6-2, 6-4 against Eastgate's third pairing.

Cindy Ireland returned to the team after a few years absence to partner Bridgett Scott and they battled through some very long matches during the afternoon.

Against Eastgate's third couple Cindy and Bridgett won the first set on a tie-break then lost the second set 3-6.

In the deciding tie-break they were pipped 10-8.

They then went straight back on court to take on the second couple, losing the first set 4-6 and then winning the second on a tie-break.

Again, the match went into a deciding tie-break and in spite of a long fight Bridgett and Cindy lost 11-9.

The overall match score of 8-1 to Eastgate did not reflect how close the rubbers were.

Next weekend the team will be travelling to Boston.
