WOODHALL Spa British Superbike rider Steve Plater scored a fine sixth place in the final of the Short-track Christmas Cracker event at Scunthorpe.
The event should have taken place on December 28 but the snow put paid to that and the meeting was hurriedly re-arranged for Monday of last week.
Short-track racing, which originated in the USA, is a combination of motocross and speedway and is becoming popular in the UK, so much so that there is to be a 10-round series at circuits throughout the country in 2006. (For more details see www.shorttrackuk.com).
Steve, who has been racing in the British Superbike championship for the past six years, had just a short while to accustom himself to the bike.
He sailed through the three six-lap heats and then the eight-lap semi-final to win a place on the grid for the final.
After a gruelling 12 laps of backing the bike into corners at break neck speed he completed his day in a fine sixth place and said: "I have really enjoyed myself today.
"I was a little apprehensive as I haven't been on a speedway bike since I was 15. But it all went off very well and I enjoyed the experience. It's another string to my bow!"
Steve was privileged to ride the first flat track bike to be built in the UK, the CCM FT35R alongside team mate for the day Andy Moore who races Speedway for Eastbourne in the Elite league.
Steve now returns to the task of securing a ride for 2006 in the British Superbike series. "Although I have been in lengthy talks with a number of teams I have yet to seal a deal for the new season.
I am still talking to a couple of people so hopefully I will be in a position to announce my plans shortly," said Steve.
The county star is also planning to compete at the 2006 North West 200 road races in Ireland in May and also take in selected rounds of the World Endurance series, including the Le Mans 24-hour race.
Last year he rode in the North West 200 races where he finished second to Honda rider Michael Rutter and is hoping to go one better this time around.
