A six-year-old girl from Coningsby has raised more than £800 for the British Red Cross Society after swimming 64 lengths at Horncastle Pool.

Grace Twilton, a pupil at Kirkby on Bain Primary School, was cheered on by family and friends as she completed the swim - the equivalent of a mile - last Saturday.

Now, she hopes her big-hearted effort will help the Red Cross feed needy families.

Grace completed the swim in just over an hour - and immediately wanted to get back in the pool.

She said: “It was a long way. It was hard but in the end, it was a bit easier than I thought it.

“My arms and my legs were a bit tired but I didn’t want to give up. I just kept going and going.”

Grace decided to undertake her marathon swim after watching Children in Need on TV last year.

She is already established as a promising swimmer in her particular age group.

Mum, Jenna, said: “We’re so proud of Grace. She has done really well.

“I’ve got to admit, when she first said she was going to swim a mile I wasn’t sure how long that would be in the pool.

“When someone told me it was 64 lengths, I was a bit concerned.

“But I knew Grace would do it. She is very determined,”

Together with her mum and dad, Bobby, Grace has studied the work of the Red Cross.

Jenna added: “We read something on the website that £100 can help feed a family of six for a week.

“Grace said she’d be really pleased if that’s where her money will go.

“It would be fantastic to think that she’s managed to help other families and children in real need.”

Jenna is not a keen swimmer herself and was happy to stand at pool-side, counting the lengths. Dad wasn’t far away either.

Grace said she wanted to thank everyone who had helped and admitted the support made her even more determined.

She hopes to swim at the Olympics when she is older.

She has already set her sights on more fundraising next year but isn’t sure whether it will involve swimming.

Grace will celebrate her seventh birthday tomorrow (Thursday) by flying to America to visit her grandparents.
