Making a splash for the Channel Challenge

Maggie Lindley, a teaching assistant at St Hugh’s School, Woodhall Spa, is attempting to swim 22 miles in total by December.

She took up the Channel Challenge to raise money for the charity Aspire.

It means she has to swim 1,416 lengths of Horncastle’s 25 metre swimming Ppol - the equivalent of swimming the English Channel - before December 2.

After visiting her mum in Kent, Maggie saw a leaflet advertising the challenge.

She said: “I was at my mum’s in Kent and we went to her local swimming pool because it was new.

“I saw leaflets there advertising the challenge.

“After picking one up I sent off for my welcome pack.

“Aspire have sent letters of encouragement, and even a towel.”

Aspire is a charity which offers support to those who suffer with spinal injuries.

Although it wasn’t originally intended, Maggie revealed how she could have benefited from the help Aspire offers.

She added: “A few years ago we were on holiday in Egypt.

“I fell over on a boat and injured my spine.

“I managed to get home on the plane and then I went to my doctors.

“A few months later I had an X-Ray and it showed I had broken two vertebrate in my spine.

“It’s just purely coincidental that I’m now raising money for a charity which could have helped me if I’d had further problems.”

Undeterred by her injury, Maggie went on to complete a marathon walk in Edinburgh and the following year, completed a Triathlon.

Maggie continued: “I was pushing myself each month to get better.

“I remember feeling hopeless.

“It’s nice to raise money for people going through a similar thing to me.”

She is also no stranger to fund raising having raised money for charities since the 1970s.

She said: “I’ve raised money every year for as long as I can remember.

“It’s been at least 40 years.”
