Woodland dormice project is thriving ten years on

Dormice are thriving in Chambers Farm Woods as the project marks its 10th anniversary.

The project monitors rare dormice which were released into the woods near Wragby 10 years ago. Dormice are legally protected in the UK and over the past 100 years have disappeared from about half their habitats. They were reintroduced to Lincolnshire after becoming extinct in 2002.

Chambers Farm Woods has a team of six licensed dormouse handlers and local conservationists who have carried monthly checks every summer since the project began.

The team also helps with tasks such as copicing trees and repairing and erecting nest boxes.

The checks are done on dormice found in boxes and show a healthy, growing population with 77 having been found so far this summer.

Adrienne Bennet, Forestry Commission ecologist, said: “The project has been a terrific success with the creature spreading into new areas of the wood.

“All this stems from a colony of just 32 captive bred adults released a decade ago. It shows what sensitive woodland management and a team of fabulous local volunteers can achieve.”
