Veterans from Britain and Poland will re-unite in Woodhall Spa for commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem.
The battle was one of the most controversial in military history.
Many of the troops involved were based in Woodhall Spa as they prepared for a mission which was code-named ‘Operation Market Garden.’
It involved troops from Britain and Poland.
The 70th anniversary commemorations - on September 6 - will be the first time many of the veterans have met since the actual battle.
Jackie Goodall, from the Arnhem Commemoration Committee, said: “It promises to be a memorable and emotional day.
“The plans are going really well.
“A number of veterans are travelling to Woodhall Spa. Hopefully, there will be one or two from Poland and it will be marvellous to see them.”
There is a memorial to the battle outside the Cottage Museum in Woodhall Spa.
A service is held annually but this year’s commemorations promise to be particularly special.
A host of events have been planned. Hundreds of visitors are expected to commemorate another ‘chapter’ from the village’s proud wartime history.
The day will include a parade from the Cottage Museum to the Petwood Hotel.
It will feature the Dutch Freedom Flame, the Waddington Pipe Band, regimental standards and an Airborne Forces veteran contingent including two Arnhem veterans and the mascot of the Staffordshire Regiment.
The Freedom Flame - which hasn’t left Holland since 1948 - will be carried by representatives from St Hugh’s School, the Air Cadets and the Army Cadets.
There will also be a church service in St Peter’s, a memorial wreath laying ceremony and a luncheon with invited guests including the Polish ambassador.
The Kinema in the Woods is hosting a selection of films entitled ‘Down Memory Lane.”
Mrs Goodall thanked various bodies for their support including Lincolnshire County Council and East Lindsey District Council.
Regiments have already donated around £2,000.
Winners of a Horncastle News competition to design a logo for the commemorations will also attend.
