Why love is in the air for a very happy Horncastle couple

High fliers: Howard Cooper and Louise Hartley

Even the most confident person would tell you that proposing marriage can often be ‘a wing and a prayer’ experience.

That was definitely the case for Howard Cooper.

He couldn’t even get down on one knee to propose to his bride-to-be Louise Hartley.

There wasn’t room ...not in the cockpit of a Spitfire fighter aircraft!

Howard decided to pop the question at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight headquarters at RAF Coningsby.

He opted for the BBMF’s new Spitfire which recently took to the skies for the first time in 58 years.

Fortunately, Louise said yes, ensuring love really is in the air for this happy Horncastle couple.

Howard and Louise live in Spilsby Road, Horncastle.

They both work for Turners and are employed at the RAF base at Coningsby - Howard as a maintenance assistant and Louise as a cleaner.

Howard explained: “We’re both mad about the old aircraft so I thought why not.

“I wanted something special, something different. I don’t think too many people will have proposed in the cockpit of a Spitfire!

“I had to ask various people to get permission but fortunately everything came together.”

However, Howard’s best-laid plans very nearly backfired.

Louise was ill leading up to the big day.

Howard added: “I’d kept everything a secret and had told all the other Turners’ employees to turn up for a group photograph.

“Then, Louise was ill and it was touch and go whether she’d make it.

“I don’t think she suspected anything, even when she was pulling on her work gear and I told her to put a bit of extra make-up on.”

Howard and Louise have known each other for five years and have been together for the last two.

They plan to tie the knot on June 28 next year at the Dower House Hotel in Woodhall Spa.

Howard admitted he his a ‘bit of a romantic’ but said he might struggle to top the marriage proposal.

He said: “I’ll have to try and dream up something really special for the honeymoon.”

Louise admitted she was overwhelmed by the location of the proposal.

She said: “I’m shocked and ecstatic. I’m the happiest girl in the world.”
