With 10 official beacon lighting ceremonies, and many residents in Lincolnshire planning their own celebrations, the Brigade is offering advice to stay safe.

Shona Wright, community safety manager at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “This event is a great opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate the Queen’s birthday and there’s set to be many celebrations across the county on Thursday.

“We don’t want to put a dampener on things – we just want to remind people to keep safe around fire – so ensuring children are supervised at all times, and making sure that everyone is stool well back at a safe distance from the beacon.

“If residents are creating their own beacon to celebrate the birthday, we’ve put together some tips on creating a safe environment, which include: location of the beacon, advice on lighting the beacon and keeping people a safe distance away from the beacon.”

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s top tips:

* Position beacons away from sheds, fences and trees.

* Don’t build beacons too big and make sure the stack is stable so it doesn’t collapse.

* Check the beacon before lighting it to ensure there are no children or pets are nearby.

* Don’t use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going as it may get out of control quickly. Use paper and firelighters instead.

* Construct a safety barrier out of ropes and stakes or scaffold poles to ensure public is kept at a safe distance from the fire.

* Don’t leave beacons unattended.

* Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby just in case.
