Potholes in Newmarket, Louth, have been highlighted by a mystery artist this week in an apparent bid to try and speed up repairs.

The ‘artwork’ was shared by the Potholes of Lincolnshire Facebook page today (June 3), in an apparent bid to highlight the problem and pressure the authorities into repairing them.

The anonymous culprit also painted the tag ‘Wanksy’ - a play on the name of popular street artist Banksy - next to the pothole.

Similar graffiti around potholes has been documented elsewhere in the country in previous years, in the hope of pressuring councils to act more quickly in carrying out repairs to the roads.

This afternoon, the Leader received correspondence from someone purporting to be ‘Wanksy’, who said: “The motivation is people are fed up of the state of our streets, ones we drive, walk, and cycle on.

“It is dangerous and is costing us money on repairs, and people are getting injured.”

The Leader has contacted Lincolnshire County Council for comment.
