Veterans remember comrades
ON PARADE: Veterans of Arnhem display their standards during a ceremony at the Cottage Museum in Woodhall Spa.
A LARGE gathering of veterans assembled in the gardens of Woodhall Spa’s Cottage Museum to remember the brave soldiers who took part in one of the Second World War’s most famous battles at Arnhem.
Of the 2,320 men who left Woodhall Spa in September 1944, only 471 returned after nine days of fierce fighting.
Reverend Andrew Smith, Priest in Charge at St. Peter’s Church, led a short service after which the assembled standards and veterans proceeded across The Broadway to the museum, led by a lone piper.
Wreaths were laid and John Egleton, chair of the Woodhall Spa and District branch of the Royal British Legion, gave the Ode to Remembrance which was followed by The Last Post and two minutes’ silence.
