Town’s twinners strengthen special French connection
WHEEL POWER: Horncastle Mayor, Councillor Fiona Martin, with winners from a cycling race during the twinning visit to Bonnetable in France.
LINKS between Horncastle and French twin town Bonnetable are stronger than ever following a highly successful cross-Channel visit by a 50-strong delegation.
The Horncastle group, which included Mayor, Councillor Fiona Martin, travelled to Bonnetable during one of the French town’s most important weeks of the year.
It was the venue for a national cycle race, a fete and one of the region’s biggest agricultural shows.
Coun Martin said: “It was a really successful trip and we were made to feel very welcome.
“The links between the two towns seem to get stronger and stronger and that can only be a positive thing for the future.
“The bonus this year was there was also a visit by a similar group of people from Twistringen in Germany and we made a lot of new friends.”
With three mayors in Bonnetable at the same time, a series of new signs were erected, celebrating the French town’s links with England and Germany.
An added highlight for Coun Martin was the fact an interview she recorded was broadcast on France’s national television station.
The Horncastle delegation was bolstered by 14 members of the Banovallum Singers who took part in two concerts during the four-day stay.
Both concerts were packed to the rafters and the Banovallum Singers received standing ovations and positive feedback.
They were joined by choirs from Bonnetable and Twistringen in a finale that was conducted by Horncastle’s Maureen Gay.
During the visit, the Horncastle delegation stayed with local families and visited a number of places of historical interest. They also spent time with Catherine Paysan, a well known and respected author and poet.
The chairman of Horncastle’s Twinning Association, Gerry Moslom, said the visit was designed to foster international understanding at a personal level.
He added: “We achieve this by linking individual families and communities. A feature of the visits is always the wonderful hospitality, fun and laughter.”
He revealed many of the people involved had developed close friendships with their counterparts and visited each other outside planned trips.
