Tomato plants reach end of road
TOMATO plants growing in a Horncastle street appear to face a short life.
The News revealed last week that as many as half-a-dozen plants were thriving in cracks which had appeared in the surface of Watermill Road.
They were protected by barriers supplied by Lincolnshire County Council.
However, the County Council says the plants will be ‘removed’ when the road surface is resurfaced.
Andrew Ratcliffe, Area Highways Manager for the council, said: “We put the barriers up around the cracks in the road to help keep people safe and somehow, a few very small tomato plants have grown through these cracks.
“It is a bit of a mystery about how they have got there but they will be removed when the road is repaired.”
Resident Paul Gibson, who has watched the plants grow, said he was disappointed they would be removed, before they had produced any tomatoes.
He said: “I was looking forward to some free tomatoes and was even thinking of feeding them to help them grow. I don’t think I’ll bother now.”
