Toddlers get creative to help Mali
TODDLERS will be turning rags into riches to help people in the African country of Mali create a sustainable future.
Environmental group Horncastle Transition Town has asked local playgroups to make quirky draught excluders out of recycled materials.
These will not only help keep homes snug, and more energy efficient, they will also help the group fundraise for Christian Aid's renewable energy initatives in Mali villages.
As reported, HTT is currently working on its Green Babies & Toddlers project - using 200,000 awarded by British Gas' Greenstreets scheme to give four Horncastle buildings, housing playgroups, energy-saving makeovers.
Group member Jenny Davey said: "Mali is already being affected by climate change. They can't grow their crops or find clean water. It is a luxury to have renewable energy there."
She discovered the Mali projects through her work as a French/English translator for Christian Aid.
One project, the Mali Folkecenter, has already been successful in places such as Tabakoro village.
Solar panels have been used to generate elecricity for a health centre, a school and a water pump, giving them 24 hour access to health care, a fridge to store life saving vaccines, electricity at the local school and clean water all year round.
More than 80 toddlers are expected to participate in the charitable craft-making in the coming weeks.
This includes the Children's Centre in Boston Road, Tiny Tots in Queen Street Methodist Church, Horncastle Community Playgroup in Horncastle Community Centre, Manor House Street and Woodlands Nursery in the War Memorial Centre, North Street.
All of these buildings were chosen by HTT to receive energy saving makeovers.
Lincolnshire Waldorf Parent and Child Group at Chambers Farm Wood near Wragby have also been producing the draught excluders.
HTT is appealing for donations of old clothes, material and coat hangers.
