Residents in Horncastle have given their backing to plans for a multi-million pound flood defence scheme to protect the town.

Work on the £7.7m project could start within the next two years - as revealed in the News last week.

The Environment Agency says the defences - which will feature a series of embankments in the upper Bain valley - will ‘significantly’ reduce the risk of flooding.

David Preece, who lives in St Lawrence Street, said he was delighted.

He added: “I’ve only lived in Horncastle for three years but it (flooding) is a constant worry.

“A few weeks ago, I went to work and the river level was up quite a bit.

“When I came home, it was almost over the top of the sandbags that had been put out.

“It is worrying every time there’s heavy rain. I’d welcome anything that will help.”

Sarah Harris said her property close to Horncastle town centre had flooded twice in the last six years.

She said: “I think the fact something positive is being done at long last is good news.

“We’ve only finished the work after the flooding last October.

“Okay, it’s covered by insurance, but you worry about having to make any further claims - or whether you’ll even get insurance.

“This should definitely help.”

David Lee, whose parents’ home also flooded last October, said he would have preferred to see some of the £7.7m spent on improving the town’s ‘antiquated’ drainage system.

He added: “I can see the plan will reduce the amount of water coming into Horncastle but one of the problems is the drains. They can’t cope - as we discovered.”
