The British Red Cross has officially opened a new centre in Horncastle - and celebrated its 100th anniversary in the town in the process.
The Red Cross has had a presence in Horncastle since 1912 when the first ”detachment” was formed by Dr and Mrs Withers.
In October, 1914 - after the outbreak of the First World War - the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospital was opened at the Drill Hall with 68 beds available.
Now, the Red Cross has come home as the new centre is at Stanhope Hall - formerly the Drill Hall.
The new centre will have 28 volunteers providing a range of Red Cross services including first aid cover at events, emergency response, fund-raising activities and first aid training,
Equipment is also available for people to loan on a short-term basis to boost greater independence at home.
The official opening took place last Saturday and the Mayor of Horncastle, Coun Fiona Martin, was among the guests.
Visitors had the chance to watch a series of first aid demonstrations and try out a variety of equipment.
There were also displays of photographs and memorabilia from past years.
Betty Morton, the centre organiser, said: “I really hope the local community will get behind us.
“Please come along and see us and find our about your local British Red Cross.”
