Ready for winter ice
THE Horncastle area will benefit this winter from one of 12 new gritters which are on order by Lincolnshire County Council.
A 26 tonne Mercedes Schmidt gritter will be based at a highways depot in Horncastle and will replace older vehicles that the County Council previously relied on to keep the region’s roads open in bad weather.
The gritters are part of an investment programme planned by the County Council with 15,000 tonnes of Egyptian salt also on order.
Over a third of the county’s roads will salted - including all A and B roads.
County Councillor William Webb, executive member for Highways and Transportation, said: “Getting ready for the impact of winter weather on the roads takes place all year round in Lincolnshire.
“We’re more than ready for anything that comes our way. This year, we have more salt than we ever needed before.”
Last winter, the County Council used 21,000 tonnes of salt but the latest order means 35 tonnes will be available.
