Queen's beacon lights the skies!

A great success. That's how organisers described Horncastle's official beacon lighting ceremon y to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

Big crowds turned out for the event held at the Dymoke family owned Scrivelsby Estate last Thursday evening.

Town and county councilklor Bill Aron, whoi was one of the organisers, said: “It was a splendid evening.

“The weather was perfect and the hundreds of people who came really enjoyed themselves.

“The hosts, Mr abd Mrs Francis Dymoke had build an enormous beacon in the field adjacent to St Benedict’s Church.

“The church restoration fund benefited from just over £1,000 from the evenings’ takings so that was another boost.”

Horncastle Lions were busy all evening providing hot dogs and Thurlby Motors ran a competition to guess the number of balloons in the car.

David Andrews guessed correctly and won the first prize of £50.

Larry Richie and Pete Smith brought along a couple of vintage cars that were manufactured at the time the Queen was born.

The winner of the raffle organised by the 90th Birthday Committee, was Tommy Taylor. His prize is a ride in a vintage which will take part in a parade June Parade through Horncastle as part of the 90th celebrations.

Gail Hinkins led the singing of “Happy Birthday” and just before the spectacular firework display, the National Anthem was played.

Students from QEGS presented Gail Dymoke with a bouquet of roses for her sterling efforts

Coun Aron added: “ It was a great evening - so well supported and could not have been put on without the help and support of many local organisations and businesses.”

Town and District Councillor Fiona Martin added: ” It was an excellent evening, thanks to the hard work of many people .

“In particular, we owe a big thank you to the Dymoke family and Scrivelsby Estate who hosted the event, built the beacon and prepared the site.

“The committee would like to thank everyone who helped.

“ We are now planning and all looking forward to the celebrations in June.”

Mrs Dymoke said “ We would like to add our thanks to everyone who came and made the event such a happy evening.”

Ten-year-old Nadine Matthews was one of many youngsters who attended and she said she enjoyed the fireworks most, adding: “They were brilliant. They were a bit noisy though and woke my baby brother up!”

*Horncastle has a week-end of celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday in June.

The highlight will be a grand parade through the town centre with various other events planned.
