Pupils get behind petition to protect country’s sealife
Pupils with the giant fish petition in the school hall.
SOMETHING fishy was going on at Horncastle Community Primary School on Monday.
A giant fish-shaped petition appeared on the floor of the school hall.
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust visited the school to highlight the organisation’s ongoing campaign to put pressure on the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments to create sanctuaries for sealife in the form of designated Marine Protected Areas.
Each pupil signed their name in an outline of a fish scale.
They then helped put the individual sheets together in order to form one giant fish.
Rachel Shaw from the LWT said the petition now has 9,125 signatures.
She said: “The grey seals that pup at Donna Nook are one of Lincolnshire’s most well-known wildlife sights.
“But once the seals are out to sea, it’s all too easy to forget about them.
“Our marine life is facing many threats, from destruction of habitat to overfishing.
“We must ensure there are safe havens below the waves, marine protected areas where populations of species can recover – in the same way that we have nature reserves on land.”
The majority of the signatures were collected last year when LWT asked visitors at Donna Nook National Nature Reserve to ‘sign a scale’ to show their support for protecting marine wildlife.
