The new 617 squadron memorial destined for Royal Square in Woodhall Spa

Final details of a new memorial to the 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron have been revealed - and it will be in place for a special service on May 19.

The memorial - dedicated to more than 30 squadron members who have died serving thir country since the Second World War - will be erected in Royal Square, Woodhall Spa.

It will stand alongside the existing memorial which commemorates squadron members who were killed in the actual conflict.

The squadron will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the legendary Dambusters’ raid in May. There had been speculation the memorial would not be ready in time.

However, David Robertson , chairman of the 617 Squadron Association, promised it would be unveiled at a special service in Royal Square

Mr Robertson said: “I spoke to the stonemason and everything is going to plan. I am sure it will be ready and will be a fitting tribute to the squadron.”

The new memorial will be a three metre high black granite pyramid. The design echoes the wing-form of two aircraft flown post-war by the squadron - the Vulcan and Tornado.

It will also feature the squadron badge and the inscription ‘In memory of all members of the No 617 Sqn RAF who gave their lives since 1945 in the service of their country. We will remember them.’

The polished side faces of the pyramid will contain inset red lightning flashes, the symbol carried today on the squadron’s Tornad0 aircraft.

It will be inscribed with the squadron’s post-battle honours of ’Gulf 1991’ and ‘Iraq 2003.’

The service will be the culmination of a host of special events for the 70th anniversary.

The Kinema in the Woods will feature a showing of the original ‘Dambusters’ film onMay 15.

Aircraft from the BBMF at Conignsby will stage a fly past.

After the film, a champagne reception will be held at the Petwood Hotel which was the squadron’s Officers’ Mess dur ing the War.
