New CCTV camera protection installed after lightning strike hits

A LIGHTNING strike knocked out four of Horncastle town centre’s CCTV cameras leaving them out of action for a few days.

All four of the cameras in the centre of town are linked, and the lightning strike on one of them knocked out the other three.

The control boards in the cameras had to be replaced at a cost of £1,760 excluding VAT, this was paid for by the insurance company.

As a result of the lightning strike, Horncastle Town Council have approved the recommendation of fitting protection to the CCTV cameras at a cost of £520 plus VAT to protect them from future lightning strikes.

The ‘data line protection’ will ensure that if the issue occurred again only one of the cameras would be taken out.

The council were told by Safe and Sound, the company that provides the cameras, that the problem of lightning-struck equipment was common in Louth and Alford.

Another decision made by the council regarding CCTV at this month’s meeting was to replace and move a camera to the front of the Stanhope Hall to allow for better coverage.

This will be funded by the unused allocation of the budget for the Stanhope Hall.

Plans for moving the security camera in North Street were also discussed.

The camera currently sits on the building between Heathers and Myers.

This gives good coverage of traffic on the A153, but only gives limited coverage of the A158.

It would cost £6,000 to move the camera across to the centre of the junction, which is not something that could be done within this year’s budget.

However, the council are seeking to discuss with Highways when they start work on the junction later this month to see if anything could be put in place to help reduce the costs in future.
