Marathon Man Peter chases winning note
London marathon runner
More often than not, you will find Coningsby’s Peter Waterfield repairing roads - or playing his ukulele in a local orchestra.
This summer, the 56-year-old will be attempting something a little more strenuous.
He’s running the London Marathon for the first time to raise money for the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity.
Mr Wakefield has competed in a number of shorter races but the marathon promises to be a major challenge.
However, he’s confident he will take it in his stride.
He said: “I’ve been running most of my life but usually it’s been 10k events like Woodhall Spa and The Wolds.
“I’ve always fa ncied a crack at a marathon so this year I thought I’d go for it.
“I want to raise money for a charity and I’m delighted to be running for Leonard Cheshire. It’s a very worthy cause.”
Mr Waterfield recently returned from a week of warm weather training in Lanzorote.
Competitors in the London Marathon most raise a guaranteed £1,800, just to take part.
Already, Mr Wakefield - who works for a company contracted to Lincolnshire County Council’s Highways Department - has come up with a number of fundraising ideas.
Together with his fellow members of the ukulele orchestra, he will be taking part in a concert at Coningsby Community Hall on March 23.
He’s always putting together a prize raffle while his employers have promised to make a donation to his fund.
Mr Waterfield added: “It will be a challenge but I’m really looking forward to it.”
