Children of service personnel at RAF Coningsby have joined together with a professional film company to share their experience of being a service child.
‘Outside the Gates’ is an 18 minute documentary that was filmed over a 12 week period at the Airplay Youth Club held at Clinton Park Community Centre - and on location in the Coningsby area.
Martin Tempest from Image Productions helped the children to make the film.
He said: “The children embraced the technical aspects and they were very creative, The film ticks all of the boxes in order to show what it is like to move around as a child of someone in the Forces and to then adapt to that location.”
At an exclusive screening at the ‘Kinema in the Woods’ in Woodhall Spa, the children had the chance to show the film to their parents and other adults from the RAF station.
John Milne, the Station Youth Worker said, “The children put so much effort into it. I’m immensly proud of them.”
Sophie Hodgson, 11, was one of the children in the documentary. She said: “It was great because I didn’t have to pretend to be someone else, I could be myself!”
The youth support programme for RAF Coningsby is delivered with the support of the Airplay project, which in turn is funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund and 4Children.
The intention is for the film to be distributed via the welcome packs given to families before their arrival at an RAF Station.
