IF staff and lifeguards at Woodhall Spa’s Jubilee Park pool decide on a career change, they could always try going for gold as long-distance Olympic swimmers.

Seventeen lifeguards, bolstered by staff and pool regulars, recently completed a 100-mile marathon swim to raise money for the Friends of Jubilee Park.

Their impressive efforts, which took nine hours, made £400, which will go towards a fund set up by the youth committee of the Friends of Jubilee Park who are planning to buy an outdoor table tennis table for the complex.

Park manager Joe Stanhope, who took part in the swim, said: “It was a fantastic effort. Some of the people completed 10–miles individually which is a terrific achievement.

“Who knows? We might even have a few budding Olympians on our staff. ”

The swimmers were encouraged by plenty of supporters and Mr
Stanhope said they were grateful
for the back–up - and to people who had come forward to make donations.

The fundraising event started in the early hours of the morning. Amazingly, a number of the competitors had been on duty until the early hours of the previous evening after the pool staged a ‘midnight swim.’

The night swim attracted 100 people with regular users joined by visitors from all over the county.

The water was heated to 29 degrees and hot snacks were provided by the Friends of Jubilee Park.

Mr Stanhope added: “It was really popular and we were delighted so many people turned up.

“It is the second midnight swim we’ve held and I am sure we will be looking at something similar next year.”

The pool officially closed last
Sunday after opening hours were extended for an additional week to make the most of the recent good weather.

Mr Stanhope said: “We were very busy in the early stages of the week but numbers did drop off after the schools went back.

“There was the option to extend the opening again but looking at the weather forecast, we decided against that.”
