A PROPOSAL for a new fundraising group to help stump up the £200,000 repair bill facing St Margaret’s Church at Thimbleby has been put forward.

Villager Andrew Bramley’s suggestion was “on the whole” met with support at a well attended meeting at Thimbleby Village Hall on July 10.

Mr Bramley said: “More research is needed into the best option for Thimbleby, but a Friends group or a Buildings Preservation Trust is a possibility.

“Such a group would provide a framework for fundraising and would have the advantage of drawing in supporters both from Thimbleby and the local area and also from further afield.

“It would be a good way of reaching out to all those who share a love of Thimbleby and its historic buildings.”

The community led gathering was also attended by the rector of the South Wolds Group, the Rev Alyson Buxton and the Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey, The Ven Jane Sinclair, who were on hand to answer questions.

A fundraising campaign for the church was launched earlier this year.

But in May, Thimbleby Village Church Council made a recommendation for its closure due to the significant cost of the restoration and doubts over the long term sustainability of the building for future generations.

Mr Bramley added that “many pledges of support” have been offered since the meeting.

It is hoped another meeting will be held in the near future.
