Enjoy a golden evening, says headteacher

HORNCASTLE Community Primary School is preparing to welcome the local community for a special celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Over the past few weeks the Horncastle News has been publishing memories of staff and former pupils of the school in Bowl Alley Lane.

Headmaster Andy Craven has now invited people to a formal presentation on Friday, October 18, to share memories and enjoy refreshments.

He said: "Over the past 50 years the school has grown to meet the needs of the community and now has over 530 pupils.

"Past and present pupils will have many memories of their time at the school and if a building could talk I am sure it would have many stories to tell about the pupils - not to mention the staff!"

The occasion will be from 2pm to 7pm and is to be followed with an informal gathering at the Admiral Rodney Hotel from 5pm to 9pm.

He added: "We are hoping to display numerous photographs of the past 50 years but need your support. If you have any photographs please send or bring them to the school office, with your name and address on, by Monday, October 14, so they can be displayed. They will be well looked after."

One former pupil, Archdeacon of Northumberland Peter Elliot, has already contacted the school, passing on his good wishes for the day and the future.

The Archdeacon was educated at the old Manor House Road school, where his father was headmaster, before going on to Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School when his father's school moved to the new premises in Bowl Alley Lane.

He said: "I can vividly remember his relief at no longer having to manage a school which operated on at least three sites, use a street and a churchyard as a playground, and crocodile in all weathers to the other side of the town for lunches of dubious adequacy and nutritional value.

"I realise all those things which seemed new then will now be commonplace, but I do believe the school has served the local community well."
