Locals complain after OAP is badly hurt – visitors say they are a big town attraction

THE cobblestones in Horncastle's market place have been branded a danger after a pensioner was left shaken and bleeding following a fall.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, tripped as she left a taxi outside the Post Office, on Thursday.

A Horncastle Red Cross volunteer and a passerby went to her aid, before the arrival of a LIVEST First Responder and paramedics who took her to Lincoln County Hospital by ambulance.

The first aider, who did not want to be named, said: "She went flying and had nasty injuries to her eyebrow, hand, shoulder and ankle."

The woman was left bleeding and very shaken, the volunteer added.

"It is those cobbles, they are deadly," she said.

Partially-sighted Keith Kelsey, from Elmhirst Road, said: "The road should be for pedestrians only and the cobbles should go.

"The market square resurfacing was a waste of money - it is still not right.

"I find crossing the road difficult, someone could be killed."

But shopper Benjamin Hopper, of Halton Holgate, said: "The cobbles are in keeping with the area's history. Visitors find them an attraction and who would want to tarmac the market place?"

Another visitor added: "Old people will fall over, the cobblestones don't make a difference."

The road surface in St Lawrence Street and the market place has been the focus of complaints since refurbishment in 1998.

That year 69-year-old Arnold Brown suffered a broken nose and received stitches in his head after a similar fall.
