Diana Award for caring student Lucy

Head girl Lucy Thompson picked up the Diana Champion Volunteer Award in a ceremony at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham.

The Diana Awards, set up in memory of Princess Diana, recognise courageous, caring, and compassionate young people who have transformed the lives of others.

Lucy (18) has represented her school in a variety of settings and always volunteers her time to the local community freely.

She has been an active part of Horncastle Town Council’s planning committee for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations and contributed to the organising of the weekend’s events.

She was praised by committee members for her “boundless” enthusiasm, ideas and her outreach work.

This has included writing letters to local schools to get them involved in the community events and visiting them in person.

Assistant Head at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Jenny Bargh, said: “We are extremely proud of Lucy.

“The Diana Award will encourage her to continue her actions and will hopefully inspire others to create further positive change in our community.

“Lucy is delighted to receive an award in recognition of her community volunteering.”

Lucy joined inspirational young people from across the UK to be presented with her award as part of the Diana Award INSPIRE Series.

It is hoped that participants in the series will be inspired by their peers receiving their award. In turn both award holders and participants will be equipped to tackle social issues, make a positive change and contribute to a brighter future for themselves and others.

Young people who attended INSPIRE Birmingham received specialised training in campaigning and community action to kick start a year long social action initiative with their peers.

Tessy Ojo, Chief Executive, Diana Award, said: “These young people come from all walks of life and many have challenging and disadvantaged backgrounds, however what they share is a deep sense of social responsibility.

“Through our unique training, mentoring and development programmes we empower and motivate them to continue contributing to their communities throughout life.

“We would like to congratulate all our new award holders.”
