Design work begins for new Horncastle to Woodhall Spa footpath - at a cost of £750,000

DESIGN work is under way for a £750,000 scheme to allow many more people to use the footpath from Horncastle to Woodhall Spa.

Walkers and horse riders already enjoy the Spa Trail, which runs along the former trackbed of the old railway line.

The injection of cash will mean a major upgrading so that it will also be accessible to cycles, wheelchairs and pushchairs, probably by spring 2010.

“There will be various access points and we will be putting in a picnic site at a suitable location,” said Mary Powell, project manager for the Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership.

“The Water Rail Way runs near the River Witham from Woodhall Spa to Lincoln and the new link will be a spur from that route to Horncastle.”

Drainage work will be carried out before surfacing of the route is completed.

It will run from Sandy Lane, Woodhall Spa, to Spindletree, Martin Bridge, Thornton Lodge and on to Woodcock Lane, near the site of the former station in Horncastle.

After the initial design work, there will be a period of consultation before the construction work begins.

The cost will be met by Lincolnshire County Council and the East Midlands Development Agency, each contributing 375,000.
