‘Crash victims remembered’- CWGC
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has confirmed that the men who perished in the Lancaster crash, remembered at East Kirkby in a special service recently, are commemorated.
The service, held at East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre, was held 70 years to the day of the loss of Lancaster Bomber ED503 and her crew at the Lincolnshire Fens at Sibsey Northlands.
On January 29, 1943, six men lost their lives after the Lancaster, ED503, crashed during a routine fighter-affiliation exercise.
Peter Francis, Head of External Communications at the CWGC, contacted the News to confirm that the Commission “does in fact commemorate these individuals and always has done.”
He continued: “Our duty extends to all Commonwealth servicemen and women who died during the two world wars at a staggering 23,000 locations in 153 countries.
“What we are not responsible for are the site of crashed aircraft of naval wrecks - which are often referred to as war graves but are not maintainable as such.
“As all, bar one, of these brave men could not be recovered, we have marked their sacrifice accordingly on the Air Force Memorial at Runnymede, Surrey where they are remembered with honour among more than 20,000 of their comrades.”
Sergeant Thomas Wishart is marked at the Dalkeith New Cemetary, and Sgt Donald Brown, Sgt John Doran, Sgt Thomas Henry, Plt Off Charles Cocks and Flt Lt Robert Lind are remembered at Runnymede Memorial.
