Councillors set to go head-to-head in election battle
A Horncastle town councillor - who was exonerated after complaints about his behaviour - is hoping to win a place on the county council.
Coun Richard Barker will stand as an independent candidate in this May’s election.
He will be in direct opposition to current county councillor and fellow town councillor Bill Aron, a stalwart of local politics.
Coun Barker’s decision comes after he was cleared of any wrong doing following a seven month ELDC investigation into complaints made by a another town councillor, David Roark.
Coun Barker said his decision to seek election was because he wanted to ‘stand up for the people of Horncastle.’
He is a vociferous critic of various highways’ issues but said there were other reasons behind his decision.
He said: “I have never been as serious about anything in my life as this.
“The county council deserves a kick-up the backside and the fiasco surrounding the roadworks highlights that.
“We have the situation with the Ropewalk roundabout that still hasn’t been sorted which is a disgrace.
“I intend to stand up for Horncastle.”
Coun Aron welcomed the challenge and pointed to his record over the last four years.
He has been a prominent figure in securing backing for a long-awaited £7.7m flood defence scheme, as well as helping lead the way in the rejuvenation of Stanhope Hall and the War Memorial Centre.
Coun Aron is adamant the roadworks have been of huge benefit to the town.
He said: “I have always recognised the need for local services and I believe my experience will continue to be invaluable to help keep this area buoyant during the difficult economic recession.”
Other candidates are expected to come forward.
