Councillor leads fight to reclaim Wong as green open space
Horncastle’s County Councillor Bill Aron is leading a campaign to reclaim a historic section of the town’s green space.
East Lindsey District Council recently announced plans to turn the Wong into a public car park, but Coun Aron, who is chairman of the Wong Working Group, is asking residents for their views on preserving the Wong as a green open space.
The working group is planning on holding a meeting at the Stanhope Hall.
Coun Aron has begun to place posters around town and hand out flyers and he is buoyed by the response from members of the public.
“The reaction from the public has been really positive,” he said.
“The public are appreciative that we are putting together a really strong case for The Wong to be handed back to the people of Horncastle.”
The working group have teamed up with Magda Read from Horizon Community Development Ltd for a public consultation.
Coun Aron added: “I’ve seen in the deeds there’s a right to hold markets and fairs, and if we claimed the space back we would like to hold food fairs and concerts on the site.”
Magda said: “This is very important to residents because the site is so historic.
“Its about making sure there is open space for people to enjoy.”
Coun Aron said: “We are confident of showing that we can manage to enchance this as green open space.
“The people of Horncastle have shown by their track record of taking over the war memorial centre and the Stanhope Hall that assets can be managed succesfully. A low cost scheme for The Wong would also mean low maintenance.”
