Coningsby Allsports received a donation of £877 from 41(R) Squadron, RAF Coningsby after the Squadron followed the Olympic Torch for 21 miles from Louth to Wainfleet St. Mary’s.

The team of 12, led by Flt Lt Gerry McCormack, recognised the achievements of 1940’s Battle of Britain Squadron Commander Group Captain Donald Osborne Finlay DFC, AFC.

He was a British athlete who took part in many competitions including the 1948 Olympics in Britain.

They also raised funds for the Coningsby Allsports club, run by Kathy Roberts, which has now grown to more than 40 youngsters.

The club averages between 24 and 30 members weekly, which means they use both pitches, but they would like to offer something for the girls.

Now the Airmen have counted their sponsored money and emptied all the buckets, which they took on their run, they found they can give £877 to the youth group.

Kathy said: “With these funds we would like to start offering netball as well as football if we have enough youngsters come forward.

“I have a lady who is a coach and willing to help with this.

“If we can get enough bodies wanting it, we will buy the nets, posts and get the court marked out.

“The council have offered to pay for the marking out of the court.”

New members are always welcome at Coningsby Allsports, especially girls, which meets at the Allan Barker Recreation Ground between 6.30pm and 8.309pm each Friday evening, weather permitting.
