“GOOD on yer cobber!”
There were certainly a few different accents around Horncastle last weekend, all the way from Australia.
A delegation from ‘down under’ visited Horncastle to see the town’s links with famous botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Banks.
Sir Joseph is often referred to as the “Father of Australia” and the visitors were from Bankstown which is named after him.
The city, which has a population of 26,000, is about 12 miles from the centre of Sydney.
The Australian delegation was headed by Jon Hillman, convener of the Museum of Bankstown Foundation Group.
He handed over a letter of greeting and gifts from Bankstown town council to Horncastle’s Mayor, Councillor Fiona Martin.
The visitors were shown around the Sir Joseph Banks Centre by trustees Jean Burton, Paul Scott and Pearl Wheatley.
Interestingly, Bankstown’s neighbouring city in Australia is Revesby which was also named in honour of Sir Joseph.
The Sir Joseph Banks Society handed over books and CD’s of display material and it is hoped the visit will lead to long-term cooperation and friendship between the two organisations.
